Dyscalculia students with poor math skills display subtle yet detectable symptoms. For example, they struggle with the sequence of steps. They have trouble computing accurately and often resort to guessing. They may also disregard symbols such as "+" and "-", and reverse numbers when reading math problems.
Schools teach math, but some learners need more practice than their peers to achieve mastery. Without explicit instruction and practice, math will not make sense to most children with learning difficulties. Unfortunately a curriculum driven instruction moves on before some children have achieved mastery.
Multi-sensory treatment. Research shows that most students will continue to struggle with learning math until a multi-sensory method is used for intervention. Science based intervention programs show impressive results for severe learning disabilities. We know from research on dislexia that multi-sensory auditory training interventions result in significant reading improvement. Which is associated with brain function changes.
Children with processing difficulties learn best by using several senses. We teach students using the Math-U-See method, which is a multisensory way to process math concepts. It’s kind of a two heads are better than one approach to math.
